Indian Railways has introduced a new daily express train linking Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai to Sawantwadi Road, slashing travel time to the Konkan region with a direct connection. The 510-kilometer route covers critical districts such as Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, stopping at 19 stations—including Thane, Panvel, Kankavli, Kudal, and the final stop at Sawantwadi Road.
Overnight and early-morning travel options
The service operates under two designations: Train No. 15087 (CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express) and Train No. 15088 (Sawantwadi Road-CSMT Express). Departures from CSMT occur at 11:55 PM, with arrivals in Sawantwadi the following day at 2:15 PM. The return journey leaves Sawantwadi at 5:20 PM, reaching Mumbai by 6:40 AM the next morning.
This scheduling caters to overnight travelers bound for Konkan while ensuring early-morning returns for Mumbai commuters. Stations along the route include Dadar, Roha, Chiplun, Sangameshwar Road, and Adavali, among others. Unlike earlier routes, this service avoids skipping smaller towns, instead connecting passengers directly to local hubs like Khed, Veer, and Aravali Road.
The initiative addresses a decades-long connectivity gap, particularly for residents, students, and workers who previously depended on indirect routes or road travel. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the train fulfills long-standing requests for a direct Mumbai-Konkan link.
Broader economic and tourism benefits
The new service is expected to enhance tourism in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, where destinations like Kankavli and Kudal draw visitors. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized its role in supporting local producers, particularly fishermen, by improving their ability to transport goods to Mumbai. He also noted that better rail access could help retain young workers in the region, reducing migration to urban centers for employment.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde described the train as essential for migrant workers and devotees traveling during Ganesh Utsav, when transport demand peaks. He also referenced the recent electrification of the 741-kilometer Konkan Railway route, which has enabled faster, more efficient journeys and reduced reliance on diesel-powered trains.
The launch aligns with broader railway upgrades in Mumbai, including platform extensions to accommodate longer trains and signaling system improvements. Vaishnaw announced that 238 new AC local train rakes have been approved for the city, with deliveries starting in 2027. These upgrades aim to reduce congestion on Mumbai’s suburban network, which handles millions of daily commuters.
While the express train directly responds to passenger needs, its success will hinge on reliability during peak seasons. The Konkan region’s challenging terrain—steep gradients and frequent rainfall—has historically complicated rail operations. However, electrification of the route and the use of modern LHB (Linke-Hoffmann-Busch) rakes suggest improved resilience against disruptions.
Vaishnaw also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including the completion of the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors and plans for a new East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor connecting Dankuni to Surat. Additionally, he noted progress on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, where two tunnel boring machines are currently excavating the undersea tunnel between BKC and Thane.
Reducing regional isolation
Travelers between Mumbai and Konkan previously faced limited options: lengthy detours via Goa or Pune, or reliance on road transport often delayed by monsoons. The new express service eliminates these obstacles by offering a straightforward alternative. Its impact extends beyond travel time, supporting closer economic ties between the Konkan region and Mumbai.

Goyal’s focus on retaining local talent suggests indirect benefits beyond transportation. If workers no longer need to relocate for jobs, it could stabilize communities in districts like Sindhudurg, where outmigration has been a persistent challenge. For traders and fishermen, faster access to Mumbai’s markets may lead to higher profits and reduced waste.
The service’s introduction just before the monsoon season holds particular significance. If the railways demonstrate reliability during heavy rains, it could encourage more passengers to shift from roads to trains, further easing congestion on National Highway 17.
At the launch ceremony, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, state ports minister Nitesh Rane, and Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde attended, reflecting strong political and administrative support for the project. The event highlighted coordinated infrastructure planning, with Vaishnaw linking the new express train to broader upgrades across Mumbai’s suburban network.
Monitoring passenger uptake, particularly during festivals like Ganesh Utsav, will be the next critical step. If the train gains popularity, it could lead to additional services, possibly even semi-fast options for shorter segments of the route.
